LILY

That’s the third dirty look I’ve sent him this morning. But James continues to ignore them and presses kisses to my lips every chance he gets. Things between us are moving fast, and he’s acting like we haven’t spent a day apart. But I want to make sure everyone’s on board with what’s happening, particularly my son. Though Caleb surprised me, putting my concerns at ease, as soon as he woke up and bolted from his room.

When he spotted James pouring a cup of coffee in our kitchen, he didn’t ask any questions, just threw his arms around the tattooed biker’s leg and hugged him good morning. Now, we’re making breakfast, acting like a family, as if we’ve been doing this routine together for years.

James ruffles Caleb’s hair when the kid squeezes between us to get the silverware. “Have a good night’s sleep, little man?” James hasn’t said it out loud, but I know he’s happy that my son has taken such a liking to him.

“Yep! Did you?” Caleb asks respectfully with a lopsided smile on his cute little face.

James smirks at me before replying. “The best. Haven’t had a night that good in years.”

I pull my lips between my teeth and turn my back to hide my embarrassment.

We continue preparing breakfast, moving around each other like a choreographed dance, the three of us working as a team. Caleb has the table set when James and I bring everything out before we take the same seats we occupied yesterday. It’s strange how quickly his being here has become normal. And the thought of us not doing this every morning causes a dull ache in the center of my chest. But the momentary angst is knocked away when, underneath the table, James slips his hand beneath the hem of my pajama shorts, lightly stroking my lace panties.

“Mommy, are you okay? Your face is red,” Caleb questions, and I choke on my bite of pancake.

I roughly swallow my food, then take a sip of my coffee, giving myself a second to regain my composure. “Yeah, sweetie. Mommy’s fine.”

James laughs beside me, trying to hide his amusement with a cough into his fist. I playfully smack his bicep because it’s his fault for making me blush at the table.

After we finish eating, we clean up the kitchen before moving to the living room and finding a movie to watch. We’re halfway through it when James’s phone rings.

“Gunner,” he states after lifting his cell to his ear. Within moments, his face morphs into a somber expression as his shoulders grow tense, his hand clenching into a tight fist. “On my way.” He abruptly ends the call and gives me a quick peck on the lips. Then James reaches out to Caleb, who is playing with his trucks on the floor, and pats my son on the shoulder.

“Everything okay?” It’s a rhetorical question because his actions tell me everything is in fact not okay.

“Club business. I have to go, but I’ll be back as soon as I can.
